CEC Boston Volunteers at Local Farm

May 25, 2022

Team members from CEC Boston volunteered at the Brookwood Community Farm in Canton, Massachusetts. The team spent the morning weeding onion beds for the farm. Brookwood Community Farm is a non-profit organization that grows food for more than 250 members through a community-supported agriculture model. They also provide on-farm educational and community-building opportunities, and actively support food access projects. Vegetables are grown organically on six acres of land divided between sites such as the Blue Hills Reservation and the Bradley Estate.

Brookwood Community Farm is dedicated to promoting access to fresh, locally grown food for all community members. In 2015, Brookwood worked with the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition to establish a youth-run farm stand at the Mattapan Community Health Center, which helps community members in need. Seven years later, Brookwood continues to provide training to the youth group, teaching valuable job skills, and donating produce to the farm stand. Brookwood was also involved with setting up a farmers’ market in that same community, which became one of the first Boston markets to accept SNAP benefits and participate in state programs to produce vouchers for low-income senior citizens and WIC recipients. Every year Brookwood aims to increase food access to the community through produce and seedling donations. In 2021, Brookwood was able to donate fresh produce five days a week to more than eight local food pantries and community fridges, valuing over $35,000.
