Owner Objective
Masonite Corporation is a leading international manufacturer of interior and exterior doors, primarily made from wood products, with 60 facilities in 12 countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Masonite is one of only two vertically integrated residential molded door manufacturers and the only vertically integrated commercial door manufacturer in North America.
Masonite’s Laurel facility is situated in the Coastal Flatwoods region of Mississippi and has been in operation since 1924. The facility’s stormwater is presently treated first in an aging wastewater treatment system and then discharged through the existing treatment ponds. Masonite wants to keep the cost as low as possible, so it intends to replace some pieces, update some pieces, and remove some pieces of the aging wastewater system in order to curb maintenance costs. Since the wastewater was separated into a new wastewater treatment system in a previous project, stormwater will only require an initial screening while discharging through the existing treatment ponds for stabilization.
CEC Approach
In a previous project, CEC provided engineering services for upgrades to the mill’s wastewater treatment systems; environmental and civil design services included a conceptual study, the detailed process design, equipment selection, and site engineering.
CEC is currently working to build the conceptual study design of the mill’s stormwater collection and treatment system. This system will include changes in site elevations to promote gravity flow from collection points to the planned screening operation immediately preceding the treatment system. Because the design is still at the study phase, it has not yet been designed and constructed. However, the expected benefits of the project include reduced operating and maintenance costs (from eliminating the use of the old wastewater treatment plant) while continuing to easily meet all NPDES permit requirements.
A detailed design phase will commence following approval and funding of the conceptual stormwater design.
