Raising a Glass to 25 Years: CEC Chicago Celebrates Milestone Anniversary

June 11, 2026

CEC proudly marked a major milestone in 2026: 25 years of serving clients and communities from its Chicago office. To commemorate the occasion, the team hosted a special client appreciation event, “25 Wines for 25 Years,” on May 21, bringing together more than 70 valued clients and employees for an evening of connection, celebration, and reflection on a journey that began in 2001.

A Memorable Evening of Appreciation: “25 Wines for 25 Years”

Held in a warm and welcoming outdoor setting, the anniversary event featured live music and a curated tasting of 25 wines — many as recommended by CEC staff, then curated into tasting sessions by a regional sommelier. Guests enjoyed the opportunity to mix and mingle with CEC professionals and industry peers while strengthening relationships that have been foundational to the office’s success.

The event wasn’t just a celebration of the past. It was also a meaningful thank you to the clients and industry partners who have trusted CEC Chicago with their most complex engineering and environmental challenges. The strong turnout and positive feedback highlighted the deep partnerships the office has built over the last quarter century.

From Humble Beginnings to a Multi-Disciplinary Leader

CEC Chicago’s story began in January 2001, with a primary focus on environmental projects. What started as a small operation quickly grew into a dynamic, multi-disciplinary office serving clients across Illinois and throughout the Midwest.

Over the years, the office strategically expanded its services to meet evolving client needs:

  • 2001: Established a strong foundation in environmental consulting and entered the solid waste sector with field service operations and maintenance capabilities.
  • 2012: Added air quality services and strengthened civil and geotechnical engineering expertise.
  • 2018: Launched a survey practice that has since secured major, multi-year contracts with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
  • 2018: Integrated Roake and Associates, Inc., significantly enhancing civil engineering and surveying resources, and also expanding its real estate and land development client base.
  • 2022: Introduced Cultural Resources services, further broadening the office’s comprehensive offerings.

Today, CEC Chicago operates as a full-service engineering and environmental consulting hub, delivering integrated solutions that span multiple industries and disciplines.

Growth in Leadership and Vision

Strong leadership has been instrumental in guiding CEC Chicago through its evolution. John Hock helped establish the Chicago office in 2001. He later served as Office Lead for more than 11 years. His contributions were pivotal to the office’s success and culture, and he continues to play an important role as the office’s Environmental Practice Lead.

In 2022, Brian Wozniak, P.E., stepped into the role of Vice President and Operations Lead; at the time, bringing more than 20 years of industry and consulting experience. His leadership focuses on driving continued growth across service lines including waste management, civil engineering, environmental services, and air quality.

Expanding Footprint and Capabilities

As CEC Chicago grew, so did its physical presence. In 2010, the office relocated to Lombard, Illinois, to accommodate its expanding team and service offerings, and in 2019 moved its operations to Naperville.

These moves reflected more than just growth in size. They represented a commitment to investing in people, technology, and capabilities to better serve clients across industries such as real estate development, manufacturing, mining, and solid waste.

Rooted in Community and Culture

Beyond client success, CEC Chicago has built a strong reputation for community engagement and employee-driven culture. The team actively participates in initiatives such as the DuPage County River Sweep, Brookfield Zoo Tree Trim, and local fundraising efforts like the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago’s Fall Fest 5K.

Internally, employee resource groups and programs like CEC Ignite and CECFit! foster collaboration, professional development, and a sense of belonging — ensuring that growth is not only measured in projects completed, but in people supported. Brian Wozniak is committed to enhancing employee engagement in the office and fostering an environment where employees can thrive, enjoy one another’s company, and develop their leadership skills.

Looking Ahead to the Next 25 Years

The “25 Wines for 25 Years” celebration was both a reflection on a remarkable journey and a toast to the future. From its beginnings as a small environmental practice to its current role as a trusted, full-service regional consulting partner, CEC Chicago has always been driven by strong client relationships, dedicated employees, and a commitment to delivering practical, high-quality solutions.

As the office enters its next chapter, it remains focused on innovation, service excellence, retention, and continued growth, building on the foundation established over the past 25 years. And as the event so perfectly captured, there’s no better way to celebrate that legacy than by sharing it with the employees, partners, and clients who made it possible.
