Kelly Kusevich of CEC Pittsburgh recently competed in her first triathlon — and placed first in her age group! Kelly’s time of 2 hours, 42 minutes, 41 seconds at the Edinboro Triathlon in northwestern Pennsylvania made her the top finisher among females under age 29 and put her 38th overall out of 112 Olympic tri-athlete competitors of all ages, male and female. The Olympic-style triathlon featured a .93-mile open-water swim in Edinboro Lake, a 24.8-mile bike ride, and a 6.22-mile run to close it out.
Kelly had planned to run a sprint triathlon in 2020, but that plan was put on hold because of the pandemic. Unable to find races that weren’t getting canceled and not wanting her first triathlon to be virtual, Kelly instead ramped up her swimming, biking, and running to prepare for an Olympic-style race.
Kelly is a former high school gymnastics captain who helped her school win a section championship. She then was a member of club gymnastics team at Penn State University, winning the individual all-around title at nationals before joining Penn State’s NCAA-level swimming and diving team as a diver.
