CEC: Where Internships Become Careers

September 14, 2026

At CEC, we design, build, and solve problems that shape communities. Our interns play a real role in that work from day one.

CEC began its formal summer internship program with the goal of expanding access to early-career experience across multiple offices and practices in the hopes of nurturing the best and brightest talent. Through our program, interns can expect to build a comprehensive skillset within their chosen field, obtain hands-on experience with client-based projects, and learn the values that guide CEC as a company.

Do Meaningful Work

Interns at CEC are part of the team, not observers. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals on active projects, gaining exposure to challenges and delivering solutions that have a tangible impact.

Natalie Wrazen, CEC’s University Relations Recruiter, says making real connections and networking are key parts of the internship experience.

Our culture is built on collaboration and mentorship. You’ll have access to professionals who are invested in your development. The people will guide you, challenge you, and help you grow. Whether you’re supporting site development, environmental initiatives, or business operations, your work will matter.

You won’t be navigating your internship alone. You’ll be supported every step of the way.

Our summer 2026 interns have taken full advantage of the opportunities presented to them.

Kathryn O’Neill spent her summer working in Austin’s Environmental practice. “One of the most valuable things I’ve learned during my internship is how to apply engineering principles to solve complex, real-world problems. While a classroom provides the technical foundation, consulting has given me the opportunity to think creatively, adapt engineering concepts to unique situations, and develop practical solutions that meet client needs. This experience has also strengthened my collaboration and communication skills, showing me the importance of working with others to achieve successful outcomes. I look forward to applying these experiences as I continue to grow both professionally and technically as a future engineer.”

“CEC is full of opportunities to grow and working here will benefit your understanding of the consulting sector as a whole! Everyone at CEC is extremely welcoming and eager to teach, whether or not you are a part of the same discipline. As a second-year environmental intern, I have been fortunate enough to work not only in the environmental sector, but in the solid waste, archeological, and field services sectors as well. CEC is dedicated to helping their interns reach their full potential, and you will be happy to have joined the team,” adds Jenna Hoger, an Environmental practice intern who spent her summer in the Chicago office.

Build Skills That Last

At CEC, learning happens through doing. You’ll strengthen the skills that employers value most:

  • Clear, effective communication
  • Problem-solving in real-world environments
  • Team collaboration across disciplines
  • Accountability and professional ownership

Be Part of a Strong Culture

We take pride in being a firm where people want to build their careers. Our environment is supportive, down-to-earth, and focused on doing good work together.

As an intern, you’ll experience a workplace where your contributions are respected and your growth matters.

“Everyone in the firm is incredibly kind and welcoming. They go out of their way to run an internship program truly focused on professional development for students, and there are so many opportunities to learn from those with industry experience. This is not a stereotypical internship program; the company genuinely cares about what you learn during your time here and they give you plenty of chances to provide feedback,” says April Neudorfer, a Pittsburgh office marketing intern.

Many CEC interns go on to join us full time. Your internship isn’t just a short-term experience, it’s an opportunity to build relationships, gain direction, and take the next step in your career.

Reilly Burke, a Waste Management intern in the Monroeville office, concludes, “CEC was a great place to spend a summer furthering my professional development. Interning can sound intimidating, but my peers at CEC have been nothing but supportive during my time here. My team members have always been willing to carve out time to educate me on waste management practices and landfill operations, show me their work, and assign me tasks to assist them. Working for CEC gave me the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of projects while gaining exposure to many different areas of the waste management industry.”
