On Wednesday, a representative for an environmental company told the Jefferson County Port Authority 10 tanks have been removed from the ground.

An assessment is now taking place to determine if anything else needs to be addressed.

“Basically, what we found is these tanks, the piping system, I think a little bit there’s some residual petroleum in the soil, it’s not a threat to anybody, it’s not going anywhere, but it’s got to be properly assessed under the state program,” said Brent smith, Civil Environmental Consultants.

The cleanup should be finished late this year or early next year.
