Liquid Release Testing

CEC offers liquid release testing (LRT) to landfill operators and waste generators so they may gain important information and insights about accurate disposal fees and how a particular type of waste may affect the stability of their landfill.

The types of waste being disposed in landfills are changing, and more industrial-type wastes, which are often wet and of low strength, are being disposed. These wastes can reduce the stability of a landfill, and in some cases have created slope failures that are extremely costly to repair, not to mention being safety and environmental hazards.

CEC empowers landfill operators and waste generators with valuable information by performing liquid release testing (LRT) on waste materials. This important test enables landfill operators to estimate several aspects about the waste that are important to landfill operations and profitability — such as adequacy of solidification mixes, volumes of liquid released under landfill loads, and screening for waste acceptance.

The testing consists of placing a sample of waste into a cylinder, pressurizing the cylinder to match the loads that the waste will experience in a landfill, and measuring the liquid that drains from the sample.

Conducting LRT allows CEC to estimate the volume/percentage of liquid that will drain from the waste under landfill loads, which can be an important factor in landfill stability. The LRT also allows us to estimate the in-place density of the waste, which can be important to our clients for charging an accurate disposal fee.

Further, CEC can coordinate the LRT with laboratory shear strength testing to help our clients get a full picture of how a type of waste will behave when disposed in the landfill.
