Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC)’s team of macrofouling ecologist and engineer experts is ready to assist in monitoring or control measures of zebra mussels and quagga mussels.

The zebra mussel and its close relative the quagga mussel, impact hydropower, manufacturing, irrigation, drinking water, and other water-based infrastructure by attaching to the inside of pipes and clogging the systems, a process called macrofouling. They also change the water quality of lakes and rivers where they are established, including changes to the fishery and increases in toxic algae blooms.
These invasive mussels can cause almost immediate and widespread destruction in a watershed once introduced. The mussels can spread via boats and barges or by simply floating down river and continue to be introduced to new water bodies, most recently to the Snake and Columbia River system. CEC and ecologist and macrofouling expert, Cameron Lange, have conducted monitoring and/or control plans on invasive mussels on over 100 projects over the past 35 years across the United States. He has been working on the zebra mussel issue since it was identified in North America. His expertise includes Research & Development Studies monitoring, infrastructure system vulnerability analyses, development of site specific controls, and determining the efficacy of established controls.
